'nids part 324 - Tyranid Warriors - washes

Afternoon #warmongers and #warhammercommunity I've been #paintingwarhammer on my #Tyranid Warriors. Right now I'm reminding myself I get a huge amount of satisfaction from the creative side of the hobby as the gaming aspect is leaving a lot to be desired.

I can't quite recall how long I've had these Warriors in my pile of shame. I think they were from a couple of ebay purchases. I remember vividly two auctions I won one time commuting home from work on the train. The auctions literally ending as the train is pulling into my station and I'm watching the bids to see if I was sniped at the end, but won.

I'd have guessed that was around 5 years ago, but with COVID skewing time up it's probably more like 7 or 8! Outside of a Hive Tyrant, 4 Lictors, 3 Warriors [I'm still debating turning into Shrikes] and all my Genestealer cult stuff [including my Space Hulk stealers and 13 purestrains] this represents the last of my purchased Tyranids!

As I've mentioned I fancy a Maleceptor and probably need a Zoanthrope/Venomthrope box to fill out minimum respective broods. But I can't really justify the costs and I've plenty figures I can painting to scratch that particular itch of the hobby.

After the 5 new Warriors comes the 4 upgrades to current painting standards [plus Spore Mine].

For the most part I've covered most of the original paint, very little of the Bone has been left unwashed, although I have left it in places. The glossed talons and claws have been left, hopefully and additional coat of gloss varnish will be sufficient,

There's also a subtle difference with the bases of the 3 on the right, as I originally used VGC Bronze Fleshtone for the highlights and now I use the Docraft Pumpkin [which I need a new pot of].

I don't think it makes too much of a difference and less so when all of the miniatures are synced up

Altogether the 9 Warriors and 2 Primes look like quite an impressive force on my display shelf. Even before any of the highlights it's a pretty grimdark army. Reaffirming my view that with a fraction more care they could be left at this stage. Of course I knew there were other layers to come so I can hide all sorts of mistakes - there's still Red Oxide overspray on some of the legs that I'm banking on adding more texture to the basecoats and shading when the highlights go on.

  1. I just don't play games any more and completely indulge my creative side. But that means I have less motivation to paint. I never liked Warriors because my regular opponent just erased them with Lootas back in 5th. I hear they're pretty good now and I bet a big brood of yours will look great on the table!

    1. I know exactly what you mean, my motivation has taken a huge dent thanks to my unsatisfying games so far. That said I remind myself that persevering with painting will mean that I have all sorts of options when the game feels rewarding again. We'll still keep trying to play anyways, so yes, the new Warrior rules make these a worthwhile endeavour.

In fact I think they'd started to see a return online, before the new Synaptic Link rules allowed them to add +1 to hit any unit within their synapse range. On top of that, the Crusher Stampede army you can build means you can't have single wound models or swarms, so the Warrior is the only multi-wound Troop choice and you need 3 broods of 3 minimum to fill out a Battalion. They then get a 5+ invulnerable save too, which is pretty good.

However, having done all the bone I'm also being reminded how tedious striations are...

    2. lol, I watched a game of 9th the other day. Even the players admitted the rules were so convoluted that they didn't know what was going on. (It was AdMech tho and I think they're worst than most). 9 Warriors?! I think I can field 3. I chopped up all the rest for damn fool conversion projects.

    3. But you did the most amazing Shrikes, a project I'm saving 3 Warriors on sprue to hopefully do someday. I have the crypt[thingy] wings, I just need the motivation to do it, which is less given Shrikes are no longer in the Codex. I could still run them as Warriors, or even Raveners perhaps. I'm not a huge fan of Raveners but I think they're handy now and much easier/useful Fast Attack choices than my Gargoyles.

    4. Also, the new Genestealer Cult Codex has stumped a couple of YouTubers so completely they couldn't even play with it and struggled to even review it!

  3. Heh, this is why I wrote my own 40k hack. If the rules are unsatisfying and complicated, I have only myself to blame... but I can also fix them immediately.

    1. Interesting. I think our problem has been we attended a number of tournaments in the past, and for that reason it made sense to fully embrace matched play. We were never expecting to win but unfortunately you still have to follow the rules closely. Now we're not really considering going to tournaments so perhaps a narrative approach might be better? Although I like the crusade system, I also know we're not playing enough for that to feel worthwhile.
