Terrain is everything - Middle Earth Osgiliath Ruins - Tower

Afternoon #Warhammer Community I know it's been a while but I've actually been #PaintingWarhammer on some MESBG terrain I was lucky enough to get for Christmas. These were all 3D printed sets on Amazon that my wife and my mate Pete got for me. Alternatively you can pick them up at www.qp3dwargames.co.uk The tall tower got it's dome blessed with Verdigris 🗽and is almost complete.

This ruin is a little further behind.

I wanted to put some 'soil' on the walkway, there'll be some grass on there too.

It might not make a lot of sense but it will help it match up with the MESBG boards at Otty's when they're complete.

Particularly when the top piece is used separately.

This corner ruin is a bit further on.

The B&Q Ottawa emulsion paint is working really well for the drybrush, even if my brybrushing is really rough - it's good enough.

The viaduct is behind. This is in part du to the added basing material on top. All the additional sand glued on, then painted brown and highlighted.

The corner tower ruin also was textured up.

The top piece was highlighted. I suspect I'll use this separately too.

It seems unnecessary as a vertical extension. Whereas it would be more useful as additional low-level terrain.

The brown is bold, but I didn't want anymore grey adding to the terrain.

Not to mention that most of Otty's exposed dirt in a tan colour and this would help me blend it in.

Around this time of year I talk about my post-Christmas malaise. Usually, I suggest the feeling is different to the previous year, which is either true or me trying to convince myself it's not. Regardless I have found very little motivation to go out to the shed to paint. I'm tired so much, the weather is awful and I just don't want to. Then I feel guilty these aren't done as they could have so easily been finished by now. It's a tough one and it's made the blog pretty quiet for January. But I am not going to beat myself up about it. They'll be done eventually, patience and understanding for 2026!

Terrain is everything - Middle Earth Osgiliath Ruins from QP3D Wargames

Afternoon #Warhammer Community I've been #PaintingWarhammer on some MESBG terrain I was lucky enough to get for Christmas. These were all 3D printed sets on Amazon that my wife and my mate Pete got for me. Alternatively you can pick them up at www.qp3dwargames.co.uk I started with prime with of yellow primer, filler to help cover some of the FDM printer lines. I should have read the supplied instructions that recommends 2 to 3 coats of this. But I didn't. That said, for FDM, the lines aren't that bad at all and one coat managed this.

I then sprayed it with a cheap grey primer and then a zenithal white to get the pale grey/white Osgiliath colour I was hoping for. I even added some splatter spray effect, to give the impression of  mottled stone. Two further coats of spray helped with the lines even more, but if we were up to 5 coats with 3 filler/primer who knows how smooth they'd look.

Each piece was then washed with a grey/dark tone mix. Here the top building has already had a Stonewall Grey drybrush. Here I realised I'd need to mix a similar colour from cheap grey and white craft acrylics, as I'd use all my Stonewall otherwise. I was a little disheartened that a fair bit of my spray pattern and zenithal highlights were erased by the wash and subsequent highlights.

With my Stonewall mix I drybrushed the entire tower. Then used my Miniature Paints Cream to highlight to top. Realised the same issue about using up my good paint and actually switched to a B&Q emulsion tester pot of Ottawa paint. It's an off-white and was great,

I then added some AP Green Tone wash to create mildew stains on the stone, with some Basilicanum Grey Contrast paint added to make some variety in the colouring.

The rest of the tower was still to be done.

Here I added Vallejo Game Effects Dry Rust [similar to Typhus Corrosion]. Its a fine texture paint, which did an amazing job of smoothing out the FDM Lines - the entire model would look great in this after a prime. It would give it that fine texture on the stonework too.

Naturally I want to paint the dome as Blessed Verdigris🗽but that brown does look awesome as a dull bronze, challenging my usual proclivities. We'll have to see what comes next.

Terrain is everything - Crisis Protocol (and Star Wars Legion) Cosmic Terrain - TO DONE! ⚪

Afternoon, you may recall I had been volunteered to paint the Crisis Protocol Cosmic terrain pack. But in the style of my Star Wars Legion Rebel Barricades. I am really happy with the results, although 'finished not perfect'.

There are some areas I could have spent more time on, but I was looking at the diminishing returns and wanted to get them done in time for our next shed session.

Then it turned out it was delayed a week as Ben and Otty were attending a midweek MESBG at Warhammer World.

Still, by accepting they were good enough I can now move onto other projects. And this building is worth 10 hobby points. It's a bit of a stretch, but it's not worth 5 and not 20pts either.

Getting to focus on my Adeptus Titanicus stuff now will really help get my head in the game for my #DreadTober Warlord Titan.

But yeah, I still wish the door was green, to reflect the shed.

But I know it works better in red and is a nice additional accent colour across the set.

The neon green signs came out OK.

But my gloss varnish did not give the flat surface I was hoping for. There are far too many brush strokes and surface textures which make it a bit dissapointing.

I also think the shutters could have done with 'more'. But they're so hard to see what would be the point. I'd also like to have done a graphic logo in the space below the counter. Too late with all the grime on it but it would have taken far too much time as well.

The power cells/converters are much better now with the weathering and additional glows on the black strips. Worth 10 hobby points [2 x 5pts]

I just used gun-metal drybrushes to highlight the black as a cheat. I feel guilty as it was a shortcut but I'm not sure anyone is going to criticise.

Similarly the tubing, with just contrast. Liam and Ben are totally into contrast paints so I doubt they're going to see it as lazy. It's not what I'm used to doing but I do conceded it looks like greasy rubber.

The broken wires look OK though. The yellow and black wire seemed slightly more 40k than Star Wars, but I think the addition of the blue, red and white wires helped to keep the Star Wars palette.

The barricades are cool. I did a few weathering highlights on the bone colour. Worth 8 hobby points [4 x 2pts].

I was lazy and didn't highlight the orange weathered areas. I should have done for my own obsession, but no one will be noticing it amongst all the other details.

The holo-adverts, giving strong Necron vibes. Worth 4 hobby points [2 x 2pts]

I'm not sure if the black is too dark and more green would have helped sell the look I was after, but the green glowing letters are cool, if a bit messy.

Again, the gloss varnish let me down. At least I have chance to get some more to try and fix them before they go to the shed.

And the floor lights/force field emitters.

I didn't bother with any highlights on the weathering.

It just seemed unnecessary. I just love the Aethermatic Blue though.

It's not like these will have any in-game effect, just decorative scatter terrain. They're worth 4 hobby points though.

But they look really cool and will add ambience and narrative to our games.

And the first of this season's Great Big Chrome Stamps of Approval. FYI, according to my spreadsheet this set is worth 41 hobby points [plus the 5 point terrain bonus]. That's a pretty good haul, when my non-binding goal is 100 points! So I'm off to a great start this season, especially as these weren't a project I'd started in the Season of Wood and capitalising by finishing them early in The Season of Chrome. In actual fact I'd have liked 41 points at the end of that season to break the 500 point milestone. Still, it's not a competition, just a record of achievement.

Terrain is everything - Crisis Protocol (and Star Wars Legion) Cosmic Terrain

Afternoon, you may recall I had been volunteered to paint the Crisis Protocol Cosmic terrain pack. But in the style of my Star Wars Legion Rebel Barricades.

Ordinarily I'd have had some earlier WiP pics, but I seemed to forget that was a thing. They were primed Red Oxide, then a slight zenithal with Army Painter Skeleton Bone. Orange and brown panels were picked out and then Burnt Umber art acrylics wet sponged, dabbed and daubed - to give that grimy effect.

I printed and sponged a stencil for the numbers. Used Aethermatic Blue in the 'power cell' windows. The panels lines had Strong Tone washes and some drybrush highlights for definition.

I used an Aurebesh font to say 'Otty' on the front and 'shed'. Then realised the door should be green, but I liked red more. The number on top is Naboo Aurebesh, just with some stencil tweaks. It's 1066 for the Battle of Hastings, obviously!

Power cells/converters. I had planned to do some stripes on these before I realised there were natural panel lines demarcated already. However, you can just about see some unfortunate pencil marks I couldn't rub out.

I'm not a huge fan of the contrast on the pipes. The intention was more highlights but it just felt like a greasy rubberised tube so thought I'd leave it as is.

Don't know if these are free-standing lamps.

Or force-field generators. But the Aethermatic Blue once again came into its own.

It was actually the inspiration to put it on the booth and power cells. It does so much compared to the Basilicanum Grey on the pipes above.

Some illuminated signs. I was debating whether these would be green, pink, red or orange. But lime green seemed the sensible choice as I can really make it glow. The edges will be full on, like light shining on refractive acrylic. It also needs some Aethermatic Blue in the circles on the frames. You can also see I started the weathering on these - sponging VGC Charred brown on the edges. It's also based on my Deathwing Land Raider Redeemer technique.

Some basic barricades too. They're more like cast concrete, or plastic filled with water , they'll still serve as standard barricades in Legion.

So, just the weathering, glow FX and some additional details and these are done. I still think these would work in Crisis Protocol. They're obviously very different to the box art examples but I don't see them being outside of the Marvel realm of possibilities.
