March 2nd is #OldStuffDay

Afternoon #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity, just a heads up March 2nd is Old Stuff Day. More than a decade ago now warhammer39999 wanted to join a movement to rediscover lost gems from the world of hobby blogs and it's still going strong today. The aim is to choose one or more of your own blogposts that you're most proud of, or may not have got the attention it deserved, or any thing that may warrant some necromantic blogpost bothering. On top of that you share blogposts from other bloggers which you think deserves the same spotlight of attention, before they're returned to their dark nightmare infested slumbers.

However, I know a lot of hobbyists don't have blogs, maybe they Twitter or Insta, in which case go back to one of your old tweets and retweet or share one of your oldest figures or the first miniature you ever painted. If you feel inclined to check out the old fuddy-duddy blogosphere for cool posts that's cool too. And don't forget to add #OldStuffDay

So, if you have a blog don't forget to root through your old posts and rediscover those hidden gems. Feel free to use the Old Stuff Day poster by Firstkeeper from DeviantArt. Celebrate Old Stuff Day with the rest of us.

Terrain is everything - Munitorum containers - all change

Afternoon #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity I've been #PaintingWarhammer on my Munitorum Containers. When last you saw I had containers in red/bone, yellow/black and teal/red with my 4th [the top one] still in it's red primer stage, plus lots of under-weathering. The plan was to do it white/orange to fit with my Genestealer Cult. However, I had not plucked up enough courage to cover all that weathering.

Until now that is! I know, it's a big jump but not taking pictures was the only way to get through this period, although I admit now I come to document it, it's incredibly frustrating not having the interim steps.

This is almost complete, and the teal/red was much improved too, enough for me to display in my Armies On Parade unfinished - no one but me would notice.

Sadly I don't have any other interim pics, but on the plus side the next set of pics are TO DONE! ones which are always cool.

'nids part 339 - Zoanthrope - TO DONE! [Red & white pics]

Afternoon #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity I've been #PaintingWarhammer on this Tyranid Zoanthrope. I'd forgotten how long the striations on Chitin can take but the end result is exactly what I expected.

The orange psychic glow was snap decision in the end, although my Genestealer Cult Patriarch has the same effect.

Although my more recent one was my more common green glow, while my oldest was just the flesh pink with no effort to represent it's psychic powers.

I had my oldest metal one stored away so I wasn't thinking about how different it would be in comparison. Funnily enough I painted the tiny claws black on both my Finecast, amending the 2nd one who had just plain bone ones like my original version. I've kept the metal one out as I will find time to update it in the future.

Although I'm pleased with my choice for glow I'm not 100% sure on the execution.

I think perhaps the highlights and shading should have been inverted.

That the whitest areas should have been in the recesses, not on the raised areas.

I mean it's not bad by any stretch or technically wrong - I'm sure it could glow this way. But, I think it would have had moregoing for it the other way round.

It's not the end of the world though and even when i come to update the metal one I'll stick to this way of doing it.

The big question is what colour do I go for?

I had wanted to do a pink/purple glow or plasma blue.

I think it'll be pink/purple because I've not tried it before.

It might not work but it's a challenge and that's what I need to do with these things to stretch myself. Even if it doesn't work I may learn in the process so maybe the next time it'll work - we'll just have to see.

And with that a GREAT Big RUSTY Stamp of Approval

'nids part 338 - Zoanthrope

Afternoon #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity I've been #PaintingWarhammer on this Tyranid Zoanthrope. Although, having written this post now I realise that chronologically there are other things I've been working on that I should have shared first - nevermind. Back when you could have Zoanthropes and Venomthropes as single models it was never an issue I had only 2 and although they're no in plastic I want my third to look like the other two. I got this Finecast one off ebay but I can't seem to find any earlier pics, it's been in progress for a while.

Although it hasn't actually taken many hours to paint - my Tyranid scheme is so straightforward. As usual the base was done first, I've done the basecoats, shade washes and highlighted the bone areas. Chitin plates next and red fleshy highlights. Then, the glow effect that will be present on the brain is definitely something I will be debating what colour to do it in.

Now I can find any previous post so I'm giving myself the Great Big RUSTY Big Build Base Stamp of Approval for the basing!

#BloodBowl - Orc Team test model

Afternoon #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity I've got plenty of showcase posts to write up, but for now - I first built and based my Orc team [alongside the Human team] in January 2017. So, it's been over 6 years since I started them! This particular guy has been a WiP since July 2020 but I don't think I shared the pics. In fact I wasn't even sure I'd taken any at all. But he was my test for skintone. Originally I did it with the pink lips that are common  among Orcs now but didn't like it and went lighter green instead.

I base coated it it Caliban/Angel green, the counters and the rest of the team too.

I then did all the highlights on this one just to see what it was like and then promptly mothballed the project for 3 years! It's not like I didn't do anything else though, it just wasn't a priority. But now it is for #NewYearNewArmy and hoping this will form part of my four way BloodBowl 7's megabowl #ArmiesOnParade2023

Now this has been stalled for so long, some of the models are starting to have their primer wear off! It was only a cheap matt black spray but even so. I've been trying to get my head round the black uniform for a while and I've had a couple of inspirations - Tyler Russo's amazing Orks at Billion Dollar Clown Farm and this Orc Team by Robbin Cruddace.

I'd been awed by Tyler's grunginess and it looked so cool but Robins monochrome effort looked so easy to replicate. As much as wanted to I couldn't stick to the monochrome, had to add an accent colour, which brought me back to Tyler's Goff warband. I did start each strap and cloth with VGC Charred Brown, before adding VG Extra Opaque Heavy Red highlights. Additional shading has helped keep it a darker red than I usually go.

The markers had Incubi Darkness as highlights, which will need changing as I went with Skavenblight Dinge on the Orc. Otherwise, I'm just so pleased with the result. It was a couple of hours of fiddling to get here but I'm so happy, I just can't wait to do the rest. I think next step is highlight all the flesh on the rest of the team. That's a big challenge as I can't remember how long this one took. I just need to get into that batch painting process to help move things along.

Dark Angels - Deathwing Knights and Terminators - BIG BUILD TO DONE!

Afternoon #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity I've been building models as part of my BIG BUILD. I first put my 'remaining Deathwing Terminators' on my 2016/17 BIG BUILD TO DO LIST. Lets just process that for a minute - I planned to BUILD these in 2016 and it's taken 7 years just to fit them into my build schedule! To be fair it took my 5 years to paint the first 5 Deathwing Knights, and I was somewhat traumatised by the process. This second set was bought at the same time, the Dark Vengeance expansion box had 2 sets of Knights and no Ravenwing. It's a little annoying that there isn't an extra Mace of Absolution and you're forced to run a flail, when a unit of 10 limits it to one flail only,. Nevermind, I'm not likely to play them anyway!

Now this is a fun kitbash of sorts. There's a mix of standard plastic Terminators, Dark Vengeance plastics, Veteran upgrade sprue and parts from the command/Knight upgrade sprue.

When I get round to priming/basing them I'll fill in all the details but feel free to see what you can spot.

And a few more - an Apothecary, a Deathwing Champion and Flamer [in case I ever play Space Hulk]. The champion was a Forgeworld Red Scorpion Carab Culln I ended up with from a trade year's back. I cut all the Scorpion motifs off and thought he'd look great holding that Halberd on high in a pose I think his arms are physically incapable of achieving!😂

I have a couple more torsos and legs but can't seem to find the motivation to finish them off, as I think I need to magnetise Cyclone Missile Launchers on them. 13 is far too many for me to do at once anyway. With the basing sand added they're now ready to be primed when the weather is a bit better. I'll do all the basing and no doubt they'll sit on the shelf for another few years, but who knows... Here's the Great Big Big Build RUSTY Stamp of Approval for the build.
