Old stuff Day 2025

Morning #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity it's #OldStuffDay 2025. Quite a few years ago now warhammer39999 wanted to join a movement to rediscover lost gems from the world of hobby blogs. To choose one of your own blogposts that you're most proud of, or may not have got the attention it deserved or any thing that may warrant some necromantic blogpost bothering. On top of that you were to share blogposts from other bloggers which you thought deserved the same spotlight of attention before they were returned to their dark nightmare infested slumbers.

Here's some great posts from other bloggers. Apologies to the many great bloggers out there I haven't included, you do sterling work too, these are just the ones I was reminded to remember over the last 12 months [or remembered from previous Old Stuff Days]:

From The Warp
As always on Old Stuff Day, Ron From the Warp remains the inspiration for my blog. He may have stepped away from blogging 2012 and we only shared the blogosphere for 18 months or so, but you acknowledge those that came before and he did it so well. Since last year Ron has actually reformatted the blog to be easier to navigate. No new content but if you want to check out some great tutorials it's a much more rewarding experience now.

GMM Studios
If you've never heard of GMM Studios, it's a one-man painting commission business. There are lots of commission services nowadays. Teams of talented individuals creating quality armies to varying standards depending on your budget. GMM seems to be someone who only has the one standard, and it is consistently jaw dropping. Massive armies, executed to amazing standards and all displayed on awesome backdrops, some of which are display boards for the armies. He had a fire a few years back, losing some of his materials and projects, not to mention a good portion of his home and painting studio. But, he's back in fine form, so check out his gallery of work: Galleries — GMM Studios

Marc at Old School Gaming
I often think of Marc as my southern hemisphere hobby twin. We share so much in common and his blog is always a fascinating read. As we both love Knight, lets just look at a few of his Imperial Knights though:
Old School Gaming: A Knight's Tale: Perseus Intrepidus TO-DONE!

262krieg
Speaking of Imperial Knights let take a look at DAM's banner of big freaking robots 🤖 at 262krieg.blogspot.com

Realm of Chaos 80s
How about we read a 12 year old interview with Andy Chambers. One of the most influential people in early Warhammer development.

Chucking Monkeys
Monkeychuka hasn't posted since 2022 but he had a two year hiatus between his first and second post so you never know if we've lost a blogateer or not. But he has great content and a wry sense of humour. Now, one day I hope to get a Tyranid Exocrine. I can never get over the fact it costs 30% more than a Tyrannofex for 30% less of a model. So I always convince myself to get another Tfex/Tervigon off ebay instead. But if I do, I definitely want to magnetise the Exocrine /Haruspex head and Monkeychuka has created a pretty awesome tutorial to do it: Chucking Monkeys: Magnetising your Haruspex/Exocrine

Weemen
Weemen has been a blog for 17 years! Just imagine, well you don't have to you can just look at the blog and the 100's of posts Siph and Lord HalfPenny have penned over the years. The pure productivity of them both is inspiring. So many completed models painted to a great standard and the range, from space marines to fuls scale titans - more than inspiring, it's awe-inspiring. They even have a decent scoring system to keep track of their hobby:
  • 1pt Troop type mini (25mm/32mm)
  • 2pt Termie/Bike type (40mm/50mm)
  • 5pt Rhino/Terrain/Dread/Armiger/ Flyer/AT Titan
  • 10pt Landraider/Drop Pod/Character
  • 20pt Imp Knight/Superheavy
  • 50-75pt Titan (WH50, R/WB60, WL75)
Maybe this is something I should be adopting. I always struggle with what is something worth. Rather than reinvent the wheel and create my own why not just try this? And it's backwards compatible, I can look back at previous hobby season's and score them accordingly.

Anyway, if you're ever in a position to get yourself a 40k sized Warlord Titan, you will benefit from this expert guide to building and painting your own: weemen.blogspot.com/2016/02/forge-world-warlord-titan-construction.html Not to mention join the Titan Owners Club.

Les Kouzes
I'm a massive fan of Les Kouzes, another blog started 17 years ago and transitioned to social platforms in 2023. It's a shame as the site is well made with their own cartoon profile pics. What is even more helpful is they are totally 'Old Stuff Day friendly' in respect they literally identify their 'best article of the year, between 2014 and 2020. So, let's go back a decade to 2015 and this amazing Imperial Knight flyer conversion.

Painting Bunker
I hold my hands up, I included thepaintingbunker.com/category/battle-reports/ last Old Stuff Day but although the blog itself hasn't updated since 2017 there is some news. The main reason I often think about it is the amazing terrain pieces and at least one of them is now available to buy on ebay. So, if you have £600+ this glorious piece could be yours.

Didcot Wargames Club
Mark has been blogging since April 2015 and as we approach his 10th blogaversary it's worth noting how his blog has evolved. Originally as St Andrew's Wargaming, its name has changed as he's moved around, setting up wargames clubs wherever he goes. Hopefully with them left hale and healthy in his absence. Anyway, alongside his more recent terrain posts showcasing the terrain he's building for the club he used to regularly showcase people in the hobby blogosphere with his Better know a blogger feature. It doesn't look like he's had any to share since 2019, but if you're knew to hobby blogging and want to reach a wider audience he's still asking for folk to write in...

Dreadtober
Dreadtober was started in 2015 by Greg at Feed Your Nerd, Todd at Sincain40k with many other bloggers, like John at 40k Hobby Blog jumping on the project. By the start of Dreadtober 2015 there were 48 DreadTober-teers. Since then the annual challenge has got it's own website and it's creators passed on the baton to other committed hobbyists. Marc from Old School Gaming has been keeping the flame of passion for dread sized hobby projects alive. 2025 is a decade since it's inception, so it would be good to see it with at least as many participants this year as its first outing. So start planning today by checking out some of the earliest known Dreadtober blog posts.

By taking part you'll get chance to proudly wear your Dreadtober participation badge, this was last year's. 2025's is another peach, 🍑 so you will want to get one.

My blog
As I have to recommend old blogposts from my own blog and I never know what to share how about I take the opportunity to remember our good friend Scott. It's been 3 months since his passing and I'm not sure a shed gaming session goes by without thinking about him or commenting about his unique dice rolling technique. So I'm going to share some of the posts he featured in:

The only time I ever beat Ben's Necrons, by letting Scott play with them.

Scott's epic success at the 2016 Throne of Skulls

We returned to Warhammer World in 2018 for the GT3 tournament. Scott and I were giddy resulting in  some of my favourite photos of us being silly together, while the others were seriously discussing the hobby!

Adeptus Titanicus - Grey battlefield assets, terminal pins and markers - TO DONE! 🔴⚪

Afternoon #Warhammer Community I've been #PaintingWarhammer on my Adeptus Titanicus - Battlefield assets, terminal pins and markers and no, it's not deja vu!

This is a second set of battlefield assets, this time in grey to better match some of Otty's other boards.

I also wanted to try out more use of silver. If I ever get round to my Cerastus and Warlord Titans I want to use silver more.

Not to mention my Guardians of the Covenant in silver. Stretching myself with a colour I rarely use so I'm more comfortable with it is never a bad thing.

To be fair it's not rockets science, gun metal, dark wash, gun metal highlight, silver highlight. Maybe a little more shading.

And, at a pinch, some Blessed Verdigris 🗽.

The good thing about Verdigris is it doesn't just appear on copper and brass.

I'd go so far as to argue it looks even more impressive on silver. But that's because it adds a splash of colour to what is essentially monochrome.

I also did a Legio Krytos Warlord Titan crew for Liam.

Priority badge.

Which again looks better when you can see the verdigris.

And the titan fire arc templates. They would have been so tiresome without that patina.

The extra shading provided sufficient contrast to make them more exciting.

The counters too. Maybe the verdigris was a bit too much on these but I'm not going to lose sleep on it. This will count as 2 models.

And another 44 terminal pins. I'll be treating this as 7 models in my hobby season count.

They look pretty cool.

As we reach the exact halfway point of the Season of Wood another Great Big Wooden Stamp of Approval. How are you doing in the hobby season?

Here are the pics on a white background.

These do look better n a white background.

March 2nd is #OldStuffDay

Afternoon #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity I've been #PaintingWarhammer

Afternoon #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity, just a heads up March 2nd is Old Stuff Day. More than a decade ago now warhammer39999 wanted to join a movement to rediscover lost gems from the world of hobby blogs and it's still going strong today. The aim is to choose one or more of your own blogposts that you're most proud of, or may not have got the attention it deserved, or any thing that may warrant some necromantic blogpost bothering. On top of that you share blogposts from other bloggers which you think deserves the same spotlight of attention, before they're returned to their dark nightmare infested slumbers.

However, I know a lot of hobbyists don't have blogs, maybe they Twitter or Insta, in which case go back to one of your old tweets and retweet or share one of your oldest figures or the first miniature you ever painted. If you feel inclined to check out the old fuddy-duddy blogosphere for cool posts that's cool too. And don't forget to add #OldStuffDay

So, if you have a blog don't forget to root through your old posts and rediscover those hidden gems. Feel free to use the Old Stuff Day poster by Firstkeeper from DeviantArt. Celebrate Old Stuff Day with the rest of us.

4 million

Afternoon #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity just 7 months since I hit the 3 million mark I now have 4 million on the clock... I'm putting even less store into this figure now. Maybe the 'views' are legitimate, but I don't think they're actually real human viewers - bots or crawlers perhaps?

As you can see it's another crazy rollercoaster of views with a couple of 20,000+ days followed by a fall in numbers. I'm still going to keep this counter going because it's counting something but I'm recognising it's not all it appears to be.

According to my Google AdSense I've had just 3,429 page views in the last 30 days, not the 160,000 blogger claims. That said I've earned £2.72 of those views and clicks. So, thanks for all the legitimate views and maybe they help contribute to the suspect ones - they must mean something...

Not a Battle report - MESBG Rohirrim Vs Orcs...?

Afternoon #Warhammer Community I've been #PlayingWarhammer with more games of new MESBG but unfortunately I have absolutely no recollection of this game whatsoever. This is becoming something of a pattern, what's worse is I've another 2 MESBG games and both of those haven't been written up after 1 and 3 weeks so they'll probably not make any sense either.

So, instead, lets enjoy the pics and espouse [once again] just how good MESBG is.

Even the new rules, although there are some negatives with many factions and models moving to Legends/legacy. But the game is pretty much the same with some subtle changes and additions which aren't too hard to adapt to.

Bottom line, MESBG is still the best game that Games Workshop do. I don't know how, given it often just boils down to multiple small scale combats across the board. But they all matter, they're all decisive and most of the buffs and stratagems are easy to keep track off.

More importantly the game is fun. Not just fun in an entertaining way, but also funny in a rolling on the floor kind of way that I have never experienced in any other game. Granted this often down to a simple dice roll and pretty much every game system is like this.

But these dice roles can be so pivotally hilarious. Also, by playing doubles or two versus 1 there's plenty of of scope for offering the dice to your partner to both result in jubilant success or crushing defeat. Doubles are definitely the most entertaining way to play when you're with your mates.

And MESBG looks cool too. Of course it helps when your mates are massive Middle Earth fans and have made boards and armies to showcase the best of the game. It also means I don't have to bring anything, except a bag of crisps. Although obviously I do have my own small Moria force.

I will just take a moment to moan about highlight one annoying discrepancy that the new edition did not resolve - banners. Unfortunately some match play games have specific victory condition based on having a banner. And, if your opponent does not, then you immediately score those points. Given not all factions are allowed banners I think it wrong, especially in match play, to have banners score this way.

Let the dice decide... 😵

Not some arbitrary mechanism that rewards you before the game has even started that your factions has a sheet of cloth on a stick and your opponent hasn't the wherewithal to make their own!

Boy, I wish I knew what happened in this game! Sorry I can't give any details, just know we probably had a right old laugh.

I mean look at our silly grinning faces. The question is - who's smile is fake and hiding their pain of a crushing defeat?
