'nids part 375 - Leviathan chitin highlights 2

Afternoon #Warhammer Community I've been #PaintingWarhammer on my Leviathan Tyranids. This is the second set of chitin highlights on the Neuro Tyrant.

There's the money shot on the back but there are a few 3rd stage highlights on there too.

You can just make them out on the Neurolids too.

Just imagine these as Epic scale miniatures, they'd be awesome in Legion Imperialis/Adeptus Titanicus.

The Winged Prime is also up to scratch. 

I think the tip of his tail is missing something. I might add a little red 'blush' down the line.

Oh lordy, these are hard work. Each one takes between 22 and 26 minutes to highlight.

Add in the 34 minutes for the first highlight.

And let's not forget I've another 5 that need to be built... 😫

They may look cool, but in my opinion there's just far too much detail packed into such a small model.

The Von Ryan's Leapers might just get away with that level of detail, particularly as they're broods of 3/6.

But again, for me 20 minutes of 2nd highlights, added to the 37 mins for 1st highlights.

The second trio are built, just need basing and priming.

I've a spreadsheet with this project and 73 out of 210 tasks are done [the second 'stretch' set of figures, Termagants and Neurogaunts making up most of those tasks].

The random Lictor as well.

I've still no idea what this is for, whether it will be just used as another Von Ryan's Leaper with my existing Lictor and Deathleaper - because base-sizes 😩

Anyway, red highlight next and then black talons and claws.

Old stuff Day 2025

Morning #WarHamFam and #WarhammerCommunity it's #OldStuffDay 2025. Quite a few years ago now warhammer39999 wanted to join a movement to rediscover lost gems from the world of hobby blogs. To choose one of your own blogposts that you're most proud of, or may not have got the attention it deserved or any thing that may warrant some necromantic blogpost bothering. On top of that you were to share blogposts from other bloggers which you thought deserved the same spotlight of attention before they were returned to their dark nightmare infested slumbers.

From The Warp

As always on Old Stuff Day, Ron From the Warp remains the inspiration for my blog. He may have stepped away from blogging 2012 and we only shared the blogosphere for 18 months or so, but you acknowledge those that came before and he did it so well. Since last year Ron has actually reformatted the blog to be easier to navigate. No new content but if you want to check out some great tutorials it's a much more rewarding experience now.

GMM Studios

If you've never heard of GMM Studios, it's a one-man painting commission business. There are lots of commission services nowadays. Teams of talented individuals creating quality armies to varying standards depending on your budget. GMM seems to be someone who only has the one standard, and it is consistently jaw dropping. Massive armies, executed to amazing standards and all displayed on awesome backdrops, some of which are display boards for the armies. He had a fire a few years back, losing some of his materials and projects, not to mention a good portion of his home and painting studio. Marc at Old School Gaming

I often think of Marc as my southern hemisphere hobby twin. We share so much in common and his blog is always a fascinating read. As we both love Knight, lets just look at a few of his Imperial Knights though:

Chucking Monkeys

Monkeychuka hasn't posted since 2022 but he had a two year hiatus between his first and second post so you never know if we've lost a blogateer or not. But he has great content and a wry sense of humour. Now, one day I hope to get a Tyranid Exocrine. I can never get over the fact it costs 30% more than a Tyrannofex for 30% less of a model. So I always convince myself to get another Tfex/Tervigon off ebay instead. But if I do, I definitely want to magnetise the Exocrine /Haruspex head and Monkeychuka has created a pretty awesome tutorial to do it: Chucking Monkeys: Magnetising your Haruspex/Exocrine

Weemen

Weemen has been a blog for 17 years! Just imagine, well you don't have to you can just look at the blog and the 100's of posts Siph and Lord HalfPenny have penned over the years. The pure productivity of them both is inspiring. So many completed models painted to a great standard and the range, from space marines to fuls scale titans - more than inspiring, it's awe-inspiring. They even have a decent scoring system to keep track of their hobby:

• 1pt Troop type mini (25mm/32mm)
• 2pt Termie/Bike type (40mm/50mm)
• 5pt Rhino/Terrain/Dread/Armiger/ Flyer/AT Titan
• 10pt Landraider/Drop Pod/Character
• 20pt Imp Knight/Superheavy
• 50-75pt Titan (WH50, R/WB60, WL75)

Maybe this is something I should be adopting. I always struggle with what is something worth. Rather than reinvent the wheel and create my own why not just try this? And it's backwards compatible, I can look back at previous hobby season's and score them accordingly.

Les Kouzes

I'm a massive fan of Les Kouzes, another blog started 17 years ago and transitioned to social platforms in 2023. It's a shame as the site is well made with their own cartoon profile pics. What is even more helpful is they are totally 'Old Stuff Day friendly' in respect they literally identify their 'best article of the year, between 2014 and 2020. So, let's go back a decade to 2015 and this amazing Imperial Knight flyer conversion.

Painting Bunker

I hold my hands up, I included thepaintingbunker.com/category/battle-reports/ last Old Stuff Day but although the blog itself hasn't updated since 2017 there is some news. The main reason I often think about it is the amazing terrain pieces and at least one of them is now available to buy on ebay. So, if you have £600+ this glorious piece could be yours.

Didcot Wargames Club

Mark has been blogging since April 2015 and as we approach his 10th blogaversary it's worth noting how his blog has evolved. Originally as St Andrew's Wargaming, its name has changed as he's moved around, setting up wargames clubs wherever he goes. Hopefully with them left hale and healthy in his absence. Anyway, alongside his more recent terrain posts showcasing the terrain he's building for the club he used to regularly showcase people in the hobby blogosphere with his Better know a blogger feature. It doesn't look like he's had any to share since 2019, but if you're knew to hobby blogging and want to reach a wider audience he's still asking for folk to write in...

Dreadtober

Dreadtober was started in 2015 by Greg at Feed Your Nerd, Todd at Sincain40k with many other bloggers, like John at 40k Hobby Blog jumping on the project. By the start of Dreadtober 2015 there were 48 DreadTober-teers. Since then the annual challenge has got it's own website and it's creators passed on the baton to other committed hobbyists. Marc from Old School Gaming has been keeping the flame of passion for dread sized hobby projects alive. 2025 is a decade since it's inception, so it would be good to see it with at least as many participants this year as its first outing. So start planning today by checking out some of the earliest known Dreadtober blog posts.

We returned to Warhammer World in 2018 for the GT3 tournament. Scott and I were giddy resulting in  some of my favourite photos of us being silly together, while the others were seriously discussing the hobby!

Adeptus Titanicus - Grey battlefield assets, terminal pins and markers - TO DONE! 🔴⚪

Afternoon #Warhammer Community I've been #PaintingWarhammer on my Adeptus Titanicus - Battlefield assets, terminal pins and markers and no, it's not deja vu! 

This is a second set of battlefield assets, this time in grey to better match some of Otty's other boards.

I also wanted to try out more use of silver. If I ever get round to my Cerastus and Warlord Titans I want to use silver more.

Not to mention my Guardians of the Covenant in silver. Stretching myself with a colour I rarely use so I'm more comfortable with it is never a bad thing.

To be fair it's not rockets science, gun metal, dark wash, gun metal highlight, silver highlight. Maybe a little more shading.

And, at a pinch, some Blessed Verdigris 🗽.

The good thing about Verdigris is it doesn't just appear on copper and brass.

I'd go so far as to argue it looks even more impressive on silver. But that's because it adds a splash of colour to what is essentially monochrome.

I also did a Legio Krytos Warlord Titan crew for Liam.

Priority badge.

Which again looks better when you can see the verdigris.

And the titan fire arc templates. They would have been so tiresome without that patina.

The extra shading provided sufficient contrast to make them more exciting.

The counters too. Maybe the verdigris was a bit too much on these but I'm not going to lose sleep on it. This will count as 2 models.

And another 44 terminal pins. I'll be treating this as 7 models in my hobby season count.

They look pretty cool.

As we reach the exact halfway point of the Season of Wood another Great Big Wooden Stamp of Approval. How are you doing in the hobby season?
