Anyway, you should be able to see his base is done, excet for the Bonewhite chips. I'm still enjoying this 'backwards' order of base first and the Red Oxide is also helpful. I find most white Primers temperamental, black would be too much and grey not as useful. Red Oxide though gives me my base and will create an instant subsititue for the old 'liver' colour I used to create saving me time and effort. It also increases the contrast of the colours.
He really is quite a beast but I think he should nbe relatively easy to paint, it is just an oversized Genestealer afterall. Do you reckon they just scaled the Space Hulk Broodlord by 130% then added some extra bits? It's an amazing model but I do think it could have done with some touches to make less 'perfect'. There's nary a blemish or imperfection and it's very symmetrical which is far less organic than I'd like considering the nature of the Tyranids. When you take into account the crazy Nurgle stuff that's coming out this super sleak bioform seems quite 'manufactured'. Still, he is a beast.
I foolishly forgot about Monkeychuka's Broodlord comparison with the reposed arms and have ended up with the 'big fish, little fish, cardboard box' I'll survive though.
Whilst I was in the zone I thought I might as well do the Malanthrope base too so I should have both of these moving along at a similar pace.
I'm hoping to do the basecoats next and perhaps do some first highlights to a couple of my Dark Vengeance Deathwing Terminators whilst I have the Bonewhite out. Although I'm desparate to move forwards I'm once again stuck with a hobby attention span of around 30-45 minutes so fitting in production line painting is off the cards. I'm also enjoying other distractions on our new TV, particularly as the heir apparent is sitting watching TV with me. It may not be the greatest 'quality time' but at least it is time together.
Awww Yesss! Base first is my favorite method. Or at least, I've modified it to be "mostly base first". Sometimes can throw some glazes on the base at the end to make sections of the model pop more.
ReplyDeleteBase looks great. Did you ever find those other gene stealers?
'mostly base first' - 'they mostly come at night... mostly.' ;)
DeleteThe Genestealers are being Stealth and Shrouded! I've checked with the NW Gaming Centre where Blog Wars was held, but they didn’t find them. I honestly didn’t think they would as I had noticed them absent from my ‘hobby luggage’ as I unpacked. There was however always a chance I absent-mindedly took them out and put them down without realising it. I’ve looked in the back room where I keep all my paraphernalia but with no joy. In particular just this weekend I did a proper tidy where most of the luggage is stored and the takeaway tub did not turn up. There’s still a ‘take out and replace’ everything in my hobby area exercise to do but I doubt it.
Currently I am hoping that when I contacted the GW manager, who confirmed my tool box was left at the store but was unsure about the Genestealers, has since recalled they were too. I haven’t had chance to go back since Armies on Parade. She did leave a message on the Facebook page afterwards telling me, which I responded to and promptly forgot about but I’ve since tried to find it to confirm exactly what was said but no joy in that either. I think the answer will come as and when I get to visit Southport again, which is looking like after Christmas at this rate.
Still, I have 30 ‘new’ Genestealers to paint so although I will miss the last 11, should they be forever trapped in the warp, I will eventually recoup their numbers if not the effort and uniqueness.
I'm hoping they turn up when you finish the broodlord, as they just needed to rally behind a leader :).
DeleteLol, big fish little fish cardboard box was my dance routine at the local disco for years. I never did cop off. I reckon the Spawn is different enough from the Space Hulk broodlord. Little touches like the head spike and more detailed vanes. Im glad he's very similar though. If you have a winning formula, why change it? Looking good and your efforts are making me want to paint mine now.
