I'll be honest I was gutted. It was too dark on the bone and not dark enough on the metals. It was enough to quell any enthusiasm for this project. I was also painfully aware of just how scruffy some of my other details were and it was killing it for me.
The fact is it looked nothing like this when it was we but the bone was just all wrong and I steadfastly refused to acknowledge my most important rule of painting - don't judge the finished quality of the model you are painting until you have finished painting it or more simply - don't judge your miniature until it's finished.
The fact is I eventually put paint to these, adding the first set of bone highlights and it's not beyond saving.
I'll share those pics eventually but these 2 Terminators, and the Deathwing Knights are still a challenge for me.
I've noted it takes around 40 minutes to highlight one terminator. I manage about one a night and fit in some of my Adeptus Titanicus bits too. I've 3 more to highlight before I can share their current WiP shots - I just want these done and off the pile.
I can empathize with your post, I have had the same problem but with Agrax over Xandri Dust. Forty minutes to highlight one Deathwing Terminator also tracks, I've had those Dark Vengeance Terminators for 7 years and they are still not finished because the time it takes me to highlight one up to the right shade of bone totally exhausts my hobby butterfly attention span.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work on your blog and stay healthy.
It requires a deft hand at keeping that motivation going. I've got quite a few bits and bobs that I'm switching between so the Deathwing doesn't seem so insurmountable. That also means everything takes longer so occasionally I will get a few nights of sustained effort to move them on quicker.
DeleteI'm reminding myself that once the white is complete they're almost done. Perhaps you need to treat you DV Terminators individually. Just paint one a week, from my experience when 3 of the unit are done those last 2 become inevitable...
That bone scheme has been my achilles heal for 20 years. I have given up on it now; my Space Hulk Deathwing are all stark white.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's OK. Part of me still wishes I'd done them black with the white clearly looking like it's just been daubed on - as if every battle they take their armour and apply it as a wash.
