'nids 299 - Devgaunts - TO DONE! #NidVember #NomVember

Afternoon #warmongers and #warhammercommunity I've been #paintingwarhammer, I know it's a little late now but the Devgaunts got finished and I'm only just getting round to blogging about them.

It was quite the little challenge in the end.

It doesn't seem it but getting my head round painting some of the elements required a force of will just to get me over the finish line.

I was then hit with the crappy matt varnish, that started to peel off like a thin veneer of rubber on the base edges.

That setback, so close to the end and alongside the Tyrannofex just made it so hard to pick up a brush and re-varnish them with Army Painter Anti-shine.

Also, I randomly decided not to gloss the Adrenal Glands... I dunno. Despite all other Termagant glands being glossed I just didn't do it.

There's no rush, I can always gloss them some other time.

I think the addition of that black around the edge of the Devourer really helps set it off.

The highlight is helpful also in defining the weapon.

On my original Devgaunts I just covered them with Tamiya Clear Red X-27 so it was nice to have a little more definition in their weaponry.

Obviously the 3 Hormagaunt bodies are nice in adding a little variety to the profile of this brood.

Obviously they're known for tipping over [even more so with the big Devourer gun] so hopefully the slate ont he base and the more upright poses will help them balance.

They look good from above.

And make a really nice little brood.

And so I gets me my Great Big Granite Stamp of Approval - TO DONE!'

'nids 298 - Devgaunts - progress

Afternoon #warmongers and #warhammercommunity I've been #paintingwarhammer Tyranid Termagants. Now these were actually done for #Nidvember and #Nomvember but I just didn't get chance to blog about them at the the time.

There's not much to say really, I was just getting all the elements moved on, bone and turquoise.

There was also a little more contrast added to the Devourers, because I know Tamiya Clear Red X-27 works a lot better when it has some black to gloss over.

Anyway, short and sweet. They're completed in the next post and I can lament the use of that dodgy matt varnish that I used on them before coming to my senses and returning to Army Painter Anti-shine.

Sector Mechanicus Galvanic Servohaulers - TO DONE! White pics

Afternoon #warmongers and #warhammercommunity I've been #paintingwarhammer Galvanic Servohaulers. Here's the pics on a white background, because that's what I do.

I'm not going to add much further commentary. I said pretty much everything on the red background pics.

But the white background suits some people better so here they all are...

Just a note regarding these red glass insulator coils on the front of this servohauler. I didn't take this shot in the red pics.

And the crane carriage alone, so you can see the detail on the crane ring.

It was quite the challenge to break this up - the yellow frame, the [almost] black rusty wheels, the weathered brass construction plate, brown rusted crane turning ring and orange rusted coil springs [?]

So you can see how the rusty brown carriage turning ring demarcates the two pieces. Separating the crane from the carriage. This was the intention but the end result is far more effective than I had imagined, so a lot of luck more than skill.

As the great Bob Ross would say - 'a lot of happy accidents'. Which, to be fair, was the intention. This is not the common way to do weathering, but it's a way that works for me. It is a challenge, but it's dynamic and has risks. However, it's weathering, rust and grime, so you can always add more powders or washes and it will sort itself out. Quite looking forward to the terrain next.

Sector Mechanicus Galvanic Servohaulers - TO DONE! Red pics

Afternoon #warmongers and #warhammercommunity I've been #paintingwarhammer Galvanic Servohaulers for #ArmiesOnParade. That seems so long ago now, but these were finished in time if you saw the pictures.

Obviously it was the servocrane and the medium sized servocrawler that I was painting, the small one having been completed earlier in the year.

But they make a set and it's worth seeing them altogether so the consistency between the gap in painting is evident.

I'm really pleased in the end, some additional shading has given the impression there is a layer of oil in some places, as well as the layers of rust and weathering.

I'm also really pleased about the skull motif. It felt like such an afterthought to paint it white but with the weathering it still ties in but doesn't draw too much attention away from the rest of the model.

It's just a little unfortunate GW didn't think to have the cogs at different angles. It's a little annoying that they're both at 12 o'clock. Just one of them pointing in a slight direction elsewhere would have been more realistic. Although, I do imagine it in my head and can see how that might have seemed odd... catch 22

The cran was much more of a challenge, particularly trying to get all those internal struts painted.

With only the crane and the carriage as sub-assemblies it was quite fiddly to paint but I'm not sure how else you could have broken it down.

Luckily, I wanted it grimey so if there was ever any difficulties I could just throw in some more wash to hide anything not quite right.

And it was also rewarding not to get too hung up about rusty oranges and browns and just go black in places. It adds more contrast, of which you know I'm a big fan, and ties in some of the darker elements too.l

Now that they're done I need to apply the same process to my Galvanic Magnavent from my Imperial Knight Renegades box set. The plan, of course, was also yellow but I'm also contemplating light blue or even white/bone... Anyway, that's a long term goal, got to make them first!

And so I gets me my Great Big Granite Stamp of Approval - TO DONE!'

Sector Mechanicus Galvanic Servohaulers - final details

Afternoon #warmongers and #warhammercommunity I've been #paintingwarhammer on my Galvanic Servo-haulers.

I decided to pick out the Mechanicus skull on the wheels. There's a lot of rust and oranges on these, having the skull bone just helps break things up a little bit.

Lots of Ryza Rust on the crane too, but I also picked out some red details, for cables and cylinders [funny how those are semi-cylinders - they don't go through to the other side of the uprights].

Lots of extra shading in places to make even more contrast between the yellow and rust.

I'd ummed and ahhed over the colour of the energy coils. Instead of the blue glow I could have done I decided to make them insulating glass, similar to what I did with my Predator las-cannons.

I added some highlights and will gloss varnish/Tamiya Clear Red X-27 them

I also picked out the skull at the top. It's these little details that just add an extra dimension to the models.

They're terrain and don't need to stand out too much but having these extra little elements make it a slightly more considered piece. And it has been considered, so it needs to reflect that. It's hard though because considering NOT to put something on is a lot harder to justify than considering to add an element. You can always see what's been added, not what hasn't. I guess that's a good rule for making a decision whether to do something or not...
