Blog Wars 9 - King in the North - The Aftermath

Obviously I’m back from Blog Wars 9, it’s only down the road afterall but I’ve only just had chance now to round up what went down and it was this:

So I came away with Best Painted Army, as I did in BW6, but I also secured Best Painted Character for Deathleaper. As I accepted the award my old Squat opponent Graham Sanders joked I should bring a new army next time but it did allow Alex to address the issue of previous winners winning again. I get why some people would think that it’s unfair if it keeps on winning but by that argument you would have to stop people bringing a tournament winning army list repeatedly or in the wider world tell Lewis Hamilton he couldn’t use the same car each race. That just doesn’t happen so why would the painting competition be any different?

But if the consensus changes then I’ll live with it, fingers crossed though I can actually get the Dark Angels done for November! I honestly understand the view not to have previous winners allowed [although I don’t share it] and I do want to run with something different, it’s just the lure of the Hive Mind is very strong, despite my initial aversion to them!

To be honest I actually thought Liam would win and apparently there was only one vote in it, I think if he’d have brought his Armies on Parade winning themed board to go with the Tau he might have snatched it. He did however win the best conversion category so it was still a successful day for him, especially as it’s a new category that he’d not won previously.

Back to my future Dark Angel army and I finally used my Birthday voucher that my gaming crew kindly got me and picked up the Dark Angel Expansion box.

I was so excited I even opened it in the car and got even more giddy when it seemed they’d given me 10 Deathwing Knights instead of the 5, I couldn’t believe my luck until I realised there was no Ravenwing Knight sprue! Clearly I’d got two lots of terminators instead of one each of bikes and Terminators. So I’ve contacted Customer Services and the email so far will need following up. I of course got it from Element Games so the first advice is to return it to the store, but I'm not sure when I'll have time to get out to Stockport again. I know it's only a quick trip on the train but it's my lunch hour I'll have to give up.

Also this was the last box they had in stock so I'll have to wait a while for a replacement. More worrying is the request for proof of purchase in that stupidly I was juggling my lunch, while talking to people in the store so never actually got a receipt! I'll try ringing GW and Element tomorrow see what they say but given how long I've waited for these I'm just a little bit disappointed about the whole affair.

Anyway, Battler reports will follow shortly, i'm really struggling to fit blogging into everything and I've actually got lots of news to share, darn it!

  1. Hi Dave.

I agree with your opinion that previous winners should be allowed to enter their stuff. A lot of work and time goes into painting armies (years a lot of the time) and often armies who have entered before actually have quite a lot of new stuff painted for the next blog wars (like mine for example).

Your wins were thoroughly deserved as your army is fantastic, and the attention to detail (like te blog wars flag) is great.

It was a great day and I had 3 fantastic opponents too. I did not get a chance to say hello but there is always the next one :)

    1. This time I felt so short of time it was unreal. If I really can get the Dark Angels done perhaps a smaller army might allow me a bit more time to socialise. But thanks for the comments, hopefully have a proper chat in November.

  2. Hi Dave,

Congratulations on your awards, they were well deserved. I don't think they should exclude your army, as the crowd is self regulating. I didn't vote for your best army because, as beautiful as it was, I'd seen a lot of it at previous blog wars. I did vote for Deathleaper, as I didn't recall seeing that before. If other people do the same (and I know my gaming buddy did much the same as I did, though this was post voting chat not a conspiracy) then that will give you a natural handicap.

The proof in the pudding will be when you rock up with a Dark Angels army painted to the standard of your nids. Your nids get voted for by new attendees, but a new army would probably get you an almost unanimous decision as the blog wars veterans feel "Ok THAT I haven't voted for before..."

    1. Exactly as it should be, thanks for being so candid. Deathleaper was indeed new, in truth that's what I put my effort into I was just very lucky to get that extra vote for best army. I also had the Skyshield for the first time and a new Carnifex so there wasn't a whole lot that brand new, although the Hormagaunts, Rippers, old scratchbuilt spore pod, magnetised Tyrranofex [instead of it's usual role as a Tervigon] and a good few 'new' Genestealers which I forgot to bring last time and had to use some of my old-old ones were all models I don't use very often so may not have featured in previous lists.

I have over 5,000pts now and my tastes shift and change so there's always opportunity for something different to turn up, shame my Malanthrope isn't Blog Wars legal, although the Venomthrope was pretty cool otherwise.

  3. Hi Dave,

You shouldn't be barred from using the same army, simply because your Tyranid army is so awesome! If DESERVES to win multiple times, as it really is that good.

As for the Dark Angels box from Element Games, I believe they log all purchases against your account, so there shouldn't be any problem proving your purchase.

    1. Element Games have sorted it, contacted GW and got approval to send me a replacement sprue. So I'll get it when I order my Imperial Knight so it'll save on postage for them, which is a win all round.

Thanks for the compliments, it's very much appreciated.

    1. Thanks Lightning Slayer, just need to crack on with Dark Angels now, it's made me more determined but I've got my Genestealer Cultists to complete first, so close though.

  5. I think you shouldn't be allowed to enter ur nids in fact I think u should be banned until u paint a new army I mean all the effort everyone puts into painting there armies and u steal the prize every time it's just not fair :b
