Hobby Spends 2016

In a bid to prove to my better half I don't spend quite as much on the hobby as she thinks I do I decided to keep a track of my spending in 2016. I actually only started taking note around March but most of my purchases up until then had been online so it was easy to get those records retrospectively. When I see the final figure of £610 that seems like a lot but the £190 that came in to mitigate that makes me feel a whole lot better. I would not have bought those things without the income. So £418 over 12 months isn't as bad and even better when you consider the £130 for Throne of Skulls. Of course that's money still spent on the hobby, you can't discount it completely but that does make my £34 a month habit actually £24 a month with an expensive weekend away.

Overall I'm comfortable with balance, it's cheaper than when I was doing kendo. I'll continue to be frugal, I had no plan of going to Warhammer World this year but Ben is pushing for a return and I may cave in. There'll also be a new edition of 40k but I won't want a big book, just the box game with mini rule book [still burnt from my 6th edition Limited hardback] and if the rumours are true out of the Warhammer World open day there's Adeptus Titanicus due at the end of the year.

Anyway, I had a good year, bring on 2017.

  1. I have been keeping note of my spendings for the past couple of years, will need to put a list together at some point!

I also plan to be a bit more frugal this year. I have two new armies to paint up, so this should hopefully help! Good luck for 2017.

    1. Never really kept track but I decided to audit myself just to prove I wasn't spending stupid amounts. £600,even £400 (depending on what figure you're interested in) is by no means insignificant but when my monthly spend is less than my wife's phone contract then I think it's above reproach.

    2. Yeah, that's good going. I haven't crunched the numbers yet, but I think I'll be about £100 per month overall. As you said below though, no kids to support for me either.

  2. Oh Christ - I don't even want to think how much more I've spent than you!! Good job :)

    1. You've a 30k habit and no kids, you're allowed ;) I don't like getting anything unless I can get a bargain, and that's not just hobby wise and I know I've loads of figures still to paint. Obviously that doesn't stop me buying more but that burning desire to finish what I've already got, coupled with most of them being on my To Do list helps temper excess purchases.

  3. I am going to take the plunge next 40K edition, buy the rules and get back into gaming, after skipping the last couple of editions. I still love 40K but it is so expensive to keep up with down here; especially with kids starting school :-). I think when 6th Ed. dropped I calculated that I would need to spend $600 AUD just to stay relevant! Most damningly, that would involve adding to the rising grey tide (hell, some of it is not grey: white metal and lead).

    1. Have you not looked at Kill Team? Seems the ideal way to get the full rules and game on the cheap. Your figures have so much character anyway I'd see it as ideal to keep your toe in. Of course it'll be 7th edition and then probably drop off the shelves for a long time after 8th and then the box set hits but worth keeping an eye out for its return. With that scenario in mind it really has been extremely clever how they scheduled that release. PeteB would never have returned to 40k without it!

    2. I downloaded the rules for it, but I have yet to give it a go. By getting the digital version I missed the main rulebook, unfortunately :-( I am still pretty keen to play it though, as an intro back into the game.

I'm pretty sure the general gist of the rules will port straight into 8th Ed., I know earlier editions of Kill Team are forward and backward compatible with a bit of fiddling, i.e. we played 2nd Ed. rules with the 4th Ed. Kill Team rules and it was great fun.

  4. Dave does that over all total include paints, brushes, glue & the likes ? or was it just models & gaming ?

Staying competitive at 40K has always been expensive mate but it's seem more so these days & I wouldn't see that changing with a new ED.

    1. Pretty much everything, paints, didn't need brushes (I got some for a present last year) figures the lot. I may have missed a few sundry items from the first few months and I did not include food bought at Warhammer World/events, or what I gave in petrol because that's not gaming even if it was spent in support of gaming.

Competitiveness doesn't really come into my way if thinking directly, it's more, 'this would be good', like I want a Dark Shroud that will be good for my Ravenwing but it's kind of cool too. If I was really concerned about keeping up with the power creep I'd have abandoned the nids long time ago.

    2. Sorry Dave I know your not competitive mate, my quote was more to Marc's post above.

    3. I am hoping that if they do a really big shake up of the rules, some of the older units will become more fun to play. I don't mind losing, but at the moment it can't even be called a game. I'm not going to hold my breath though :-)
