Google+ commenting

In a recent discussion with my mate Ben about the blog he reminded me of the importance of responding to comments. I'd always prided myself in how I endeavoured to respond to anyone who took the time and effort to comment on the blog, I may not have always managed it but the intent was there. However, once again thanks to IT policy it's become difficult to comment as I can no longer access the front end of my blog. In the dashboard I can see when comments have been made but responding requires me to use alternative devices.

But there is a solution, Google+ commenting. I've used it before and wasn't overly keen. I was getting a lot of notifications on my phone which was distracting, but now I probably check independently anyway so I'm distracting myself regardless. I also didn't like how it automatically converted the introduction into a comment, it just seemed unnecessary. I know some of the other bloggers use G+ commenting, maybe they can speak up for it's benefits, but what I really wanted was peoples thoughts on my switiching.

I can stick to responding as an when I can using the current system or switch to G+ [still as and when I can but with added notification of a response], let me know your thoughts.

  1. I like comments via G+, i use the platform to promote new posts anyway so it makes sense to me to have the comments pop up in my notifications on the same platform. Yes, it's irritating that when you share the post it turns up as a comment but I can live with that, and it's far more user friendly than the highly annoying wordpress alternative (that actually discourages me from commenting).

  2. Nick during a recent discussion I had with Dave I pretty much said the same thing so I'm in favour of him swopping

  3. I don't use Google+ for my own comments, but comment on a fair few blogs that use them. The only issue I have with it is that it doesn't always recognise my log in on my phone. Not sure what end the problem is on there.

I've often thought about changing over to Disqus. It seems that it promotes a lot more conversations on the blogs that use it. I've never taken the plunge though, as I am too afraid of losing all the previous comments that are on the blog.

    1. Seems like G+ might be the stop gap between blogger comments and disqus.

  4. Personally, I use Dusqus on my blog and it helps a lot with comment management, but it did erase all my previous G+ comments when installed.
If I want to comment somewhere I do it no matter what platform is being used by he blogs author :)
    Cheers

  5. I rather like the idea of using G+. I'm not a social media type person, and I'm a little bit rubbish at keeping up with my blog reading... However, I check G+ all the time, and invariably when I see a new blog post by one of you guys on there I remember to hop across and read it.

It would then be a lot easier for me to comment using G+ too, the problem being is that when I do make a comment on someone's blog, I invariably forget to go back and look at the response! I would hope me getting a notification through G+ would help in that regard.

    1. I forget to go back too. It's an important issue to have that two way conversation so it might make sense.

  6. If a blog has G+ or Disqus it is not getting a comment from me. I do not want my "real" name being attached to comments, and I do not want to have a separate login just to comment!

That said, you should of course do what works best for your general readership!

    1. I think you can unlink your blogger identity from your real name in the blogger dashboard under 'posts, comments and sharing', Share to Google+. As you have a blog it means you already have a username to post under. I think it transfer to commenting as well as posting.

    1. Ill try that again!

I like G+. There are a few things to note, firstly you can manually enter a intro for post, but I believe it doesn't work for scheduled posts and secondly, using the G+ app you can alter the notification settings.

    2. Scheduled posts represents the bulk of my blog so I'll just have to live with it.

  8. I like getting comments so it works that most of time I try to reply to everything.

    1. Me too, although I worry that sometimes there's only so many ways to say thanks without it coming across as impersonal and repetitive. We should have advice on this ;)

  9. I am using right now Dsquis: quite nice on management and you can log on with your Google account. Must say that my blog is small and dark, and you can have some problems in migrating comments.

  10. I am always signed in to Google+ anyway, so I find it convenient for managing blog comments. The automatic comment it generates when you share a post is a bit of a pain, especially if you share to multiple groups, but I got over it ;-) The Google+ 40K community is very supportive when it comes to comments as well.

I find Disqus to be a bit of a pain, to be honest. I don't know what it is about Disqus exactly, but it feels like there is an added barrier to interaction with blogs that utilise it.

I think one of the first comments I made on your blog was something like "comments on a blog are like veins of gold running through bedrock." I think I'll frame it and hang it in the man cave :-)

    1. I know what you mean, it gives you the options of which social media profile to use, even if it's a second it's that moment thinking which one do I log in as? Then I get notifications of responses to my comments and I can't muster the will to check what they are. There's something inexplicable about it, despite it perfectly functional interface.

  11. I recently installed google+ comments on my blog, since blogger did the extremely clunky upgrade to their pages. Happy with it so far and I like the notifications of comments so I can respond and not miss any
