Dark Angels - what next?!

So you probably thought I'd be back on the Ravenwing Land Speeders... well by now you know better than that. Somehow the 'crashed Aquila Lander' pricked my interest. I thought this would be a one week job, get it all green and some simple metallics a few wires and job done...

Having done a quick highlight with Caliban Green I did a second highlight with Waaagh Flesh. It's not really what I normally do with my Greenwing' but for this terrain piece I think it's fine.

I then used Vallejo Goblin Green as a highlight. Once again it's an extreme version compared to the more understated nature of the rest of my 'dark' greenwing.

But again, as a terrain piece and something that needs doing I'm happy with it.

I also went on to paint the windows, although all this gorgeousness will probably be covered up by Tamiya Clear Red X-27.

Now I'd done some sponged brown in places following Duncan's guide on WarhammerTV and then followed it up with Gun metal but although I thought it was pretty cool I splodged on some Typhus Corrosion to tone it down.

It may well have toned it down dramatically as I think only 15-20% of the metallic is still showing but I do think it's more realistic which is odd considering the rest of it is a bit cartoony.

Despite my idea that it was just a quick job I listed all these things to do [of which some were subsequently crossed off as shown]

It would still be within a week but it did seem so much still to do...

  1. The shading and the windows do make it look cartoony (I was going to say "comic book"), but extremely well done cartoony! If this was my work it would keep me awake at night, I would be so tempted to keep it how it is :-)

    1. That's all that 'thinking' I keep doing ;) Maybe I need to listen to Bruce Lee -

"Don't think. FEEL. It's like a finger pointing at the moon. Do not concentrate on the finger, or you will miss all of the heavenly glory."

    2. Indeed :o) "“What is” is more important than ‘what should be.’ Too many people are looking at ‘what is’ from a position of thinking ‘what should be’.” Bruce Lee had a great ability to find the truth of a matter; I have no doubt that's why he could punch so damn hard!

  2. I think it looks great. You almost have to go a bit over the top with windows to get the effect. Go too subtle and the effect is lost on the table. If you want, maybe try glazing it with a red to blend it a bit more, but still leave that boldness.

  3. I think that turned out very good Dave & trying something new is never easy mate & like Thor said a little wash would probably fix it.

    1. Tamiya Clear Red X-27 fixes evertything! Well, not initially but I think I fixed it in the end although how much of the original paint is noticeable is the debate that will be had.

  4. That looks fantastic! I think the more dramatic shading and weathering is well suited to the terrain pieces, it really sells it as a wreck. Good stuff!

    1. Cheers Mordian, makes me want to do my other terrain pieces, then I look at what needs to be done and I quietly retreat.

    1. It's always been a big deal for me, I;ve just neglected it for a while as the nids and the Dark Angels deserved priority status. It's one of the reasons I want to box as much of them off as possible, so I can get back to terrain.
