Tyre Safety Month

This may explain why I've published 1,000+ posts in under 5 years but it would be remiss of me not to use this platform to share something I felt was important [especially when I did the animation below ;) ]. It's Tyre Safety Month in the UK [but you can 'play' along in other countries too] and the main headline is that there were 80,000+ tyre related incidents on England's motorways over the last two years and many of those could have been prevented by a very simple '20p tyre check'.

I know this isn't hobby related, or even a particularly exciting and 'sexy' topic but if you're interested please look at tyresafes website, share the message with your friends, or at the least check your own tyres before the Winter weather hits.

Actually saying tyres aren't exciting, I bet this guy wished he'd checked his tyres...

  1. One thing that is never really taught when individual purchase and utilize cars...is that tires impact every single aspect of a vehicles performance.

The handling, the suspension (ride quality), the acceleration, and the braking. No other item on a car has such wide reaching effect as the tires.

Yet I always see people buying the crappiest, cheapest, most god awful tires they can. Sigh.

    1. We have new 'scoring systems' in the UK which rate them on fuel efficiency, stopping distance in the wet and noise. I've been looking to replace some on my new[ish] car and surprisingly one of the cheaper options is actually the best all round but I think that's more to do with the stupid size of tyres because of the ridiculous alloy wheels that were on the car when I bought it, still it does look cool ;)

    1. Can't agree more, next year will see the 20th anniversary of my own accident and also the death of my best friend to a drink driver.

  3. Nice Dave. Great animation. Terrifies me how many people go for a "budget" tyre!

    1. It terrifies me that people don't check or don't care and will happily drive around oblivious to the dangers.

  4. Tyres are always the thing that I never skimp on quality with. My car has just had it's service and the fronts are at 3mm and they'll be getting changed within the month.

    1. I'll be getting three myself this month. When I got my car they renewed it's MOT and replaced one tyre a that failed and the others were 'advisories' so I knew I wasn't going to put up with those for long, better safe than sorry.
