'nids part 160 - TO DONE! The Spawn of Cryptus

Thanks to how easy this guy is to paint I finished in a bit of a flurry because although it was fun I still couldn't get 'its just a big Genestealer' out of my head and really wanted to move on.

In fact I'm probably more excited for the 30 remaining stealers, which is saying a lot as I've stated I don't like painting them AND they're only supposed to done to primer level!

As per all my other Capillary Towers the fleshy bits are painted red, gloass varnished and then additional Tamiya Clear Red X-27 adds the gore.

And you should have seen the size of the one that got away!

Personally I think a more vertical tower would have suited better. It would allow it to fit on a 40mm round base and made it taller too.

Stripey pants.

That glossy sheen really works on the fleshy bits of Capillary Tower.

Can't say I'm a big fan of the sculpt of the face but I hope it doesn't come across as immodest when I say I did a good job of it. I'm certaainly happier with it than I thought the sculpt would produce [althought the highlight on the crest is a bit iffy, though I do see it as a skin stretched across a bony protruberance].

And some close-ups of the base, in case you're interested.

And here's the Red Stamp of Approval, now to get something done from the actual list!

  1. Looks great dave. Really love those base colors. They are just awesome. The glistening bits also add a lot of interest and you take photos around the model.

    1. The white balance goes a bit on these thanks to the predominantly warm colours but thankfully you get most of what's going on. I know folk love to do the whole white box thing but at least these predominantly red shots always stand out on blog rolls ;)

  3. Great work mate, i've definitely got some genestealer envy right now! Now that I see it close up, it is very hard to see where the skin and the chitin may meet on the crest, you would probably have to just make an arbitrary decision and paint it in. If it was my Nid scheme I would differentiate between the two parts, but I think your guy looks better as he is. I'm half tempted to get one and model a wave on the base, that's a great surfing pose...

    1. It's a difficult one, you have to decide whether it's flesh, talon, chitin or the other bit of the nid bio-construct. As all my nids have fleshy coloured faces it was either that or bone but may have looked odd.

Cowabunga! They still say that right?

  4. Really dig how that turned out, man - great work! The fleshy bits are particularly glisten-y and alien.

  5. I've always liked your colour scheme, especially on stealers and this one is a showpiece. Great job.

  6. Thanks with 30 more to paint and I think there are around 40 that I already have I may accidentally end up with a Genestealer Cult army. Now if I paint those 10 'hybrid' cultists on my to do list and add them to the non hybrid cultists that would be cool. I'd only need a limo then... [that's not one of my secret projects but maybe next hobby season, who knows?!]
